What is Zovirax?
Zovirax is an antiviral medication, which is active against herpesviruses. It is a synthetically-derived nucleoside analogue with Acyclovir as main ingredient. It is mainly applied in the treatment of shingles, chickenpox and herpes simplex viruses and works by preventing these viruses from multiplying, thus helping the body to fight the infection. The medication comes in different formulations with various strengths.

When is Zovirax indicated?
Zovirax is indicated for the treatment of herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus infections. It is typically prescribed for cold sores, shingles, herpes simplex encephalitis, ophthalmic zoster, herpes simplex blepharitis, chickenpox. The medication is also used to treat and prevent genital herpes. It can be prescribed to immunocompromised patients to treat acute chickenpox, acute mucocutaneous HSV infections and to prevent herpesviruses.

How to take Zovirax?
The following is the dosage scheme for oral forms of Zovirax:

  • Herpes zoster is treated with 800 mg 5 times a day for 7-10 days.

  • Initial Genital herpes is treated with 200 mg 5 times a day for 10 days. Recurrent disease treatment may require chronic suppressive therapy with 400 mg 2 times a day for 12 months.

  • Chickenpox in adults is treated with 800 mg 4 times a day for 5 days. Chickenpox in children older than 2 years and under 40 kg of weight is treated with 20mg/kg 4 times a day for 5 days.

What are Zovirax side effects?
Zovirax is usually well tolerated, though in some patients it may develop nausea, vomiting diarrhea and a general ill feeling. In rare cases it may spur potentially serious side effects, which require immediate medical attention, such as hallucinations, seizures, allergy, unusual bruising or bleeding, tremor, muscle pain, fever and water retention.

When is Zovirax contraindicated?
Zovirax is contraindicated to people with a known hypersensitivity reaction to Acyclovir or Valacyclovir. Patients with renal impairment may require dose adjustment. Caution should be exercised when administering the drug to patients who concomitantly receive nephrotoxic agents. Inform your healthcare provider if you are currently receiving Probenecid, Interferon, Zidovudine, Naproxen or Ibuprofen to avoid unwanted drug-to-drug interactions.
