What is Zetia?
Zetia is an oral lipid lowering component medication. It selectively lowers the amount of cholesterol and phytosterols the intestines absorb from food. It is combined with a low-cholesterol diet, exercise, and sometimes cholesterol-lowering medications to treat high cholesterol. Such a reduction of cholesterol decreases one’s chance of a stroke or heart attack. Zetia can also be used for dealing with high blood campesterol and sitosterol.
What are the indications for using Zetia?
Zetia is indicated for use by individuals suffering from high cholesterol. Zetia can help prevent them from suffering a heart attack or a stroke. This drug is often given as a second line therapy for those individuals who were unable to achieve a safe cholesterol level with the help of statins, or those intolerant to statins. Zetia can also decrease the level of some lipids in individuals with homozygous sitosterolemia, homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, primary or mixed hyperlipidemia.
What is the dosage for Zetia?
Zetia comes in the form of 10mg tablets. The exact dosage should be determined by a medical physician in accordance with the patient’s cholesterol level and individual factors. In the majority of cases, one 10mg tablet should be taken once a day, with or without food. For best effectiveness, this drug should be taken at the same time of day. Several weeks may go by before any changes in the cholesterol can be noticed. Most often, Zetia should be used in combination with statins, exercise, and other drugs.
What are the contraindications for using Zetia?
Zetia may be unsafe for patients suffering from some thyroid disorders, active liver disease, kidney disease, or those taking some form of steroid or hormone medication, including birth control pills. If you are one of these people, consult with your doctor prior to taking Zetia to see if it is safe for you to use or if you need a dosage adjustment. Zetia may also be unsafe for pregnant or breastfeeding mothers as it may get passed on to the child.
What are the adverse effects of Zetia?
Clinical trials have shown that Zetia can sometimes cause side effects such as diarrhea, headaches, sinusitis, and upper respiratory tract infection. When it is used in combination with statin, it has been known to cause myalgia, arthralgia, and nasopharyngitis. If you experience any of these side effects, consult with your doctor as soon as possible.
