What is Valtrex?
Valtrex is an oral antiviral drug that belongs to the nucleoside class of drugs. It is an effective medication for treating herpes viruses. It works by stopping the replication of viral DNA. This makes it impossible for the viruses to multiply, and thus slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus. This medication does not cure herpes, but it lessens the symptoms and makes it easier for the body to fight off the infection.
What are the indications for using Valtrex?
Valtrex is indicated for use against the herpes virus. It is prescribed to people with genital herpes (herpes simplex genitlis), infections with shingles (herpes zoster), cold sores (herpes labialis), and chickenpox. It treats both adults and children. Valtrex lessens the symptoms of these viral infections and decreases the length and severity of the outbreaks. This medication effectively prevents new sores from forming, helps the old sores heal faster, and decreases the pain and itching.
What is the dosage for Valtrex?
The exact dosage of Valtrex and length of treatment depends on the type and severity of infection. Treatment should always begin at the earliest symptom. Individuals with cold sores need to take 2g of Valtrex twice a day (12 hours apart) for one day. The recommended dosage for genital herpes is 1g two times a day for 10 days. Those with herpes zoster need to take 1g of Valtrex 3 times a day for 7 days. The recommended dosage for children suffering from chickenpox is 20mg/kg to be administered 3 times a day for 5 days.
What are the contraindications for using Valtrex?
Valtrex should not be taken by someone who’s allergic to it or to similar medications. It may also be dangerous for individuals with HIV/AIDS (or another condition characterized by a weak immune system) or kidney disease. It is also inappropriate for those who have had a bone marrow or kidney transplant, as Valtrex can be harmful to the kidneys.

The most common side effects include irritability, feeling sad, discouragement, lack of appetite, tiredness, trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, and loss of interest.
