What is Tenormin?
Tenormin (Atenolol) is a synthetic drug in the group of beta-blockers. This type of drug affects heart and blood circulation and is used for prevention of strokes and heart attacks. It works by lowering blood pressure, which is achieved by blocking of certain chemicals in the blood, such as epinephrine, which has negative effects on the heart and blood vessels.

What are the indications for using Tenormin?
Tenormin is used in treatment and prevention of the following conditions:

  • Hypertension is a condition caused by narrowing and tension of blood vessels, which results in having high blood pressure. Having hypertension is dangerous, because it can lead to heart attacks or strokes. Tenormin is an effective medicine used in prevention of these conditions.

  • Angina is a severe pain, discomfort or tightness felt in the chest, which resulted from having insufficient supply of blood to the heart. It is not considered a disease in itself, but it is among the symptoms of coronary artery disease.

  • Migraine is a severe reoccurring headache, which generally affects one side of the head and, for the majority of people, is accompanied by nausea. Drugs in the class of beta-clockers, such as Tenormin have been proved to be effective in prevention of chronic headaches.

Tenormin can also be used in combination with other drugs in treatment of other conditions related to heart and blood flow.

What is the dosage of Tenormin?
Tenormin comes in doses of 25, 50 and 100 mg. The drug is usually intended to be taken 1 to 2 times daily. The tablets are to be swallowed whole independently of food. Do not drink orange or apple juice within 4 hours of taking the medicine, as it can affect the process of its absorption.

What are the contraindications for using Tenormin?
You should not be taking Tenormin if you are allergic to its active component Atenolol. Your medical advisor should be informed if you have experienced conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, thyroid disorder and liver or kidney diseases, so that your dosage can be adjusted. Do not stop taking the Tenormin abruptly, as it can lead to worsening of your symptoms. It is not recommended to take Tenormin during pregnancy, as the medication can negatively affect the unborn baby.

What are the adverse effects of Tenormin?
Mild adverse effects of Tenormin may include insomnia, tiredness, anxiety, nervousness and nausea. If you notice any pain, fewer, slow heart rate or feeling light-headed, you should get medical help without hesitation.
