What is Tegretol?
Tegretol is administered for the treatment and prevention of certain types of seizures associated with epilepsy:
  • Grand mal seizures or generalized tonic-clonic seizures;
  • Partial seizures characterized by complex symptomology;
  • Mixed seizure patterns.
This medication can also be used to treat severe neuropathic pain that affects the trigeminal or glossopharyngeal nerves (trigeminal and glossopharyngeal neuralgia respectively). However, it is not a simple pain-killer and thus should not be used to relieve trivial pains.

How does Tegretol work?
The active component of Tegretol is –°arbamazepine, an anticonvulsant substance. It works by reducing the spread of certain nerve impulses in the brain that are associated with seizure activity. It restores the normal levels of nerve activity as well.

How to use Tegretol?
The right dose and treatment regimen for Tegretol depends on the severity of the treated condition and should be decided only by a healthcare professional. The starting dose for the treatment of seizures in adults is 100-200 mg a day, it is gradually increased up to 400-800 mg a day. For the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, the starting dose is 100 mg a day. In most patients, the control of pain can be achieved with 400-800 mg daily. Sudden cessation of Tegretol is not recommended because it might cause serious problems.

Are there any contraindications?
Tegretol should not be administered in patients with hypersensitivity to –°arbamazepine, any tricyclic compounds or any other components of this medication. It is also contraindicated in the following cases:
  • If a patient has a history of depression of the bone marrow;
  • If a patient is taking non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs);
  • Simultaneous use with MAO inhibitors (they should be discontinued for at least 14 days before administration of this medication).
This preparation can cause harm to the fetus if administered in a pregnant woman.
