What is Seroquel?
Seroquel is an antipsychotic drug used to treat several mental disorders. It was developed by the AstraZeneca Company in the 1990’s, and the Quetiapine drug (now known as Seroquel) was approved for use by the FDA in 1997. Since that time, many generic versions of the drug have appeared, yet the drug itself remains very popular and widespread. Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic, and functions by blocking the dopamine D2 receptor.

What are the indications for using Seroquel?
Seroquel is traditionally prescribed to treat:

  • Schizophrenia – a serious mental disorder characterized by a patient’s inability to recognize what is real and what is not. People who have this disorder may hear voices that other people cannot. This usually leads them to believe that other people can control their thoughts, read their minds, or are intending to harm them.

  • Bipolar disorder – a common mental disorder characterized by unusual shifts in the mood, activity levels, energy, and the ability to perform daily tasks. Symptoms of bipolar disorder are usually very severe and differ from regular ups and downs that everyone has from time to time.

  • Depression – a condition that most adults experience at one point or another in their lives. When depression occurs, a person finds his self-esteem low, his mood mostly morose, and gets very little pleasure from enjoyable activities.

  • Alzheimer’s – a degenerative disease that causes memory loss, mood swings, disorientation and other behavioral changes. It usually affects older patients.

What is the dosage of Seroquel?
Seroquel is normally supplied as tablets, which are to be taken orally. These tablets come in increments from 25 mg to 400 mg, which should be stored at room temperature. Most conditions demand two doses of 25-50 mg twice a day, though specific dosages for different disorders vary.

What are the contraindications for using Seroquel?
Seroquel must not be taken by anyone allergic to it or its active substances. Breastfeeding mothers should be aware that Seroquel is secreted in breast milk, so they should avoid taking it or breastfeeding. Seroquel is known to interact with several drugs, including Amiodarone, Moxifloxacin, Procainamide, Quinidine, Sotalol and Thioridazine.

What are the adverse effects of Seroquel?
Side effects of Seroquel may include:
  • Increased mortality among patients with dementia-related psychosis

  • Suicidal thoughts in young adults

  • Increased risk of stroke in elderly patients

  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

  • Metabolic changes including weight gain, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia

Other adverse effects may include tardive dyskinesia, hypo/hypertension, neutropenia, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, QT prolongation, cataracts, seizures, hyperprolactinemia, hypothyroidism, cognitive and motor impairment, dysphagia, and discontinuation syndrome.
