What is Protonix?
Protonix is classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drug. This means that Protonix works by blocking an acid-producing enzyme found on the stomach wall. As soon as the enzyme is blocked, the acid production decreases, and the stomach and esophagus are allowed to heal. These actions make Protonix an ideal drug for treating conditions characterized by an excess of stomach acid.
What are the indications for using Protonix?
Medical practitioners prescribe Protonix to patients suffering from conditions caused by stomach-acid. It can be used to treat the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stomach and duodenum ulcers. Protonix is effective in treating conditions caused by too much stomach acid, such as the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This drug is also approved for treating an erosive esophagitis and acid reflux. Protonix can also be prescribed to patients suffering from a constant cough, heartburn, and those who have difficulty swallowing. This drug may even help prevent cancer of the esophagus.
What is the dosage for Protonix?
Protonix is available in the form of 20, 40mg delayed release tablets, a 40mg delayed release suspension, and 40mg injection. The recommended daily dose for GERD patients is 40mg, to be taken for 4 to 8 consecutive weeks. Individuals with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome should be given 40 mg of Protonix twice per day. For maximum effect, oral Protonix should be consumed whole approximately half an hour before a meal. Do not crush, split, or chew the tablet.
What are the contraindications for using Protonix?
Protonix should not be taken by patients who are allergic to it or to other benzimidazole drugs. This medication may also be unsafe for people who have low levels of magnesium. It is contraindicated for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women as it can pass on to the baby. It may also be unsafe for those with osteopenia or osteoporosis as it can significantly increase the risk of bone fracture.
What are the adverse effects of Protonix?
Protonix is usually quite well tolerated but it has been known to cause some adverse effects in the form of nausea, rashes, diarrhea, headaches, and constipation. The less frequent but possible side effects include muscle pain, weakness, dizziness, leg cramps, irregular heartbeat, and water retention. If you notice any of these side effects, consult with your doctor if Protonix is right for you.
