Parlodel (bromocriptine is its active component) is a dopamine agonist that works by inhibiting the production of prolactin hormone by the pituitary gland without affecting the levels of other pituitary hormones. This preparation is used for certain conditions associated with increased blood levels of prolactin – menstrual irregularities, female infertility, polycystic ovarian disease, etc. It also effectively treats the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

What is Parlodel?
Parlodel is a brand name for bromocriptine, a dopamine agonist that is primarily used as part of the treatment for conditions caused by hyperprolactinemia (high levels of prolactin in the blood). Aside from treating various conditions caused by the hyperactivity of the pituitary gland, bromocriptine was also used as a treatment to lessen the symptoms associated with cocaine withdrawal. In 2009, the FDA approved this drug as a treatment of type 2 diabetes.

What are the indications for using Parlodel?
Parlodel (bromocriptine) is prescribed to treat the following conditions:

  • Hyperprolactinemia – high levels of prolactin in the body, which may result in hypogonadism, infertility, discharge from the nipples, and lack of menstrual periods.
  • Acromegaly – a condition during which levels of growth hormone are too high.
  • Parkinson’s disease – a disorder which affects the nervous system, causing the patient to gradually lose muscle control, movement, and balance.
  • Type 2 diabetes – a condition characterized by elevated levels of blood sugar, which happens when the tissues of the body become resistant to insulin.

What is the dosage of Parlodel?
Dosage of Parlodel depends on the condition being treated and the doctor’s recommendations. Parlodel is usually taken with meals twice per day. You may need to regularly visit your doctor to go through blood tests while being treated with Parlodel.

People taking Parlodel may experience increased sexual urges, or other intense urges. If this happens to you, talk to your doctor to have your dosage lowered.

If you miss a dose, take the missed dose with food as soon as you remember about it. If it’s almost time to take the next dose, do not increase the dosage to make up for the one missed.

What are the contraindications for using Parlodel?
It may be dangerous to take Parlodel if you have any of the following conditions:
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure;
  • If you have migraine headaches and are taking ergot medicine;
  • If you have a history of heart disease or if you recently had a baby.

Also, tell you doctor if you have glucose-galactose malabsorption, severe lactase deficiency, galactose intolerance, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcer or history of gastrointestinal bleeding, a tumor of the pituitary gland, or some form of mental illness.

What are the adverse effects of Parlodel?
Aside from causing allergic reactions, Parlodel may induce vision problems, chest pain, fast heart rate, runny nose, shortness of breath, rapid breathing, swelling of ankles and feet, back pain, hallucinations or confusion, low blood sugar, uncontrollable muscle movements, loss of balance, bloody stools or vomit that resembles coffee grounds.
