What is Lopressor?
Lopressor is an oral drug that is commonly used to treat hypertension. It is a beta-adrenergic blocking agent that works by lowering the amount of work the heart has to do and the amount of blood it has to pump. This takes stress away from the heart, reduces chest pain, and treats high blood pressure, thus decreasing the chances of future heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

What are the indications for using Lopressor?

  • Lopressor is prescribed to individuals suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure) who are at risk of stroke or heart attack.

  • It can also be used to stabilize the heart rhythm in patients with irregular or fast heart rhythms or as a long-term chest pain (angina) treatment.

  • Lopressor can also be given to patients who have had a heart attack in the past. This drug reduces the risk of death due to heart problems in these patients.

  • It may also be prescribed as a prevention drug for tremors and migraine headaches.
What is the dosage for Lopressor?
Lopressor is available in the form of tablets and injections. The appropriate dosage should be determined with regards to the patient’s exact condition. Heart condition patients need to start out with a 100mg per day dosage to be taken in a single or divided dose. Angina patients should start out with a 100mg dose to be divided into two doses. The dosage can be slowly increased until there is a clinical response. Those individuals who are in the early phase of definite or suspected myocardial infraction should be administered three bolus injections of 5mg each.

What are the contraindications for using Lopressor?
Lopressor should never be taken by people with a history of breathing or lung problems, such as asthma, or by those with an adrenal gland tumor, as it may make those conditions worse. Individuals with an overactive thyroid or diabetes need to tell their doctor about these conditions. Lopressor may hide the symptoms of an active thyroid and of low blood sugar. When stopping the administration of Lopressor, never stop taking the drug immediately as this can lead to irregular heartbeats, sharp chest pain, and even a heart attack.

What are the adverse effects of Lopressor?
There is evidence to show that Lopressor may cause side effects in the form of dizziness, headaches, diarrhea, gas, heartburn, muscle aches, stomach pain, nausea, dry eye or mouth, and others. Some possible severe adverse effects include tightness or pounding in the chest, difficulty breathing, chills, fainting, shortness of breath, and others. If you experience any of these serious side effects, seek medical help immediately!
