What is Lexapro?
Lexapro (Escitalopram) is an antidepressant used by millions of adults and teens around the world. This drug was developed in a joint effort by Forest Laboratories and the Lundbeck company. The drug was finished in 1997 and received approval from the FDA in 2001. As you probably know, drugs have many classes that they are divided into. Lexapro belongs to a group of them known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRI’s if shortened. SSRI’s are psychotropic in nature and function by affecting serotonin levels in the brain, mainly increasing them. This eases emotional turmoil and helps counteract depression.

What are the indications for using Lexapro?
Lexapro is indicated to treat:

  • Anxiety disorder. This is an emotional reaction to events in the present or future, most commonly stemming from fear and anxiety. Besides the emotional reactions listed above, anxiety disorders often cause symptoms like a racing heartbeat and shakiness. Anxiety is usually genetic in nature, but can be caused or exacerbated by a number of lifestyle factors. For example, alcohol, drug and caffeine use are two very big contributors to anxiety. Some of the most common anxieties include phobic disorders, PTSD, OCD, panic attacks, separation anxiety, etc.

  • Major depression disorder. This is a mental disorder that affects a truly large number of people. Symptoms of depression include sadness, loss of interest towards daily activities, apathy, and lack of pleasure. There are many theories regarding the cause of depression, with most researchers focusing on genetic, evolutionary, and individual factors.

What is the dosage of Lexapro?
Most of the time, you can find Lexapro supplied in 10 or 20 mg tablets. A 10 mg tablet should be taken once a day by an adult or minor over the age of 12. It can be taken at any time in the day, with or without food and drink. Treatment of the mental conditions described above is long-term, sometimes requiring several months. Usually, the dosage will remain the same, but in some cases, a patient’s doctor will bump the dose up to 20 mg/day if the effectiveness is low.

What are the contraindications for using Lexapro?
Use of Lexapro is contraindicated in children and patients allergic to its active substance. It is known to interact with CYP2D6 substrates like Tramadol, risperidone, and codeine, so such drugs should not be taken jointly. It is not compatible with other serotonin-affecting drugs as well as monoamine Oxidase inhibitors.

What are the adverse effects of Lexapro?
Lexapro is known to sometimes cause headache and nausea, with other effects like insomnia, pyrexia, and dizziness being far less common.
