What is Imuran?
Imuran (azathioprine) is a type of drug in the class of immunosuppressive drugs. This medication works by suppressing the influence of certain cells responsible for functioning of the immune system in the body. Imuran is most commonly used for adjustment of the immune system during the process of kidney transplantation. Imuran is one of the most effective drugs in its class and it has been prescribed for this purpose for over 50 years.
What are the indications for using Imuran?
Imuran is most widely used in prevention and treatment of:
- Prevention of kidney transplant rejection. The drug is used to lower the influence of the immune system in order to help body with the acceptance of the new organ.
- Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. This type of arthritis can be caused by the adverse effect of the immune system on the joints. Imuran helps reduce joint damage by influencing the immune system.
What is the dosage of Imuran?
The dosage of Imuran should always be approved by your medical advisor and is determined by your weight, personal medical history and severity of your condition. Do not adjust the dosage of Imuran without consultation with your medical advisor. Imuran comes in tablets, which should be consumed without chewing or breaking. The standard initial dose of Imuran is usually 25 mg.
What are the contraindications for using Imuran?

What are the adverse effects of Imuran?
Common adverse effects of Imuran may include difficult urination, cough, tiredness, sore throat, fever, bleeding gums or back pain.
