What is Hyzaar?
Hyzaar is a fixed-dose combination that contains two active ingredients Losartan potassium and Hydrochlorothiazide. This combination of an angiotensin receptor blocker and a diuretic exercises antihypertensive effect and decreases the risk of developing heart problems caused by long-term blood pressure. The drug works by dilating blood vessels and removing excessive salt and water from the blood. It comes in tablets for oral administration with different combinations of active ingredients.
When is Hyzaar indicated?
Hyzaar is indicated as a second-line treatment of hypertension in adults. It can also be used as initial therapy of hypertension when the need to achieve prompt blood pressure control overweighs the potential risk of initiating combination therapy. The drug is also indicated to patients with arterial hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy to reduce the risk of strokes. It is not approved for use in children.
How to take Hyzaar?
Hyzaar dosage should be individualized according to the drug response, concomitant conditions and other medications received. Usually the starting dose is Hyzaar 50/12.5 mg once daily. The same dosage is prescribed to patients with a history of hepatic impairment and intravascular volume depletion. It may take up to 4 weeks for the full effects of the drug to be measured, at which time the prescribing physician may titrate the dosage up or down. The drug can be prescribed once or twice daily with the total daily dose of 100/25 mg. Pills are taken regardless to meals, with a glass of water, preferably at one and the same time each day.
What are Hyzaar side effects?
Hyzaar side effects are generally rare and independent of dose. In some patients the drug may spur dizziness, nausea, vomiting, back pain, upper respiratory infection, hypokalemia. Immediately report to your prescribing physician if you develop persistent cough, swelling, vision changes or unexplained skin rash. Daily blood pressure monitoring is required to avoid severe hypotension.
When is Hyzaar contraindicated?
Hyzaar is contraindicated to patients hypersensitive to any of the drug components as well as to people hypersensitive to other sulfonamide-derived medications. It mustn’t be used in patients with anuria and mustn’t be co-administered with Aliskiren in diabetic patients.
