What is Femara?
Femara (Letrozole) is a drug in the class of aromatase inhibitors, which is prescribed to reduce the levels of estrogen among women who are in their postmenopausal period. What are the indications for using Femara?
Femara is used in treatment of the following conditions:

  • Hormonally-responsive breast cancer is a type of cancer, which can be affected using hormonal therapy. Femara is prescribed when treating breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The drug is non-steroidal and it works by reducing the production of estrogen, high levels of which can lead to breast tumors.
  • In some cases the drug can be used to cure infertility in women caused by the hormonal imbalance in the body.
There are some other indications for using Femara, but it should always be approved by your health care specialist.

What is the dosage of Femara?
The dosage of Femara should always be taken according to prescriptions of your doctor. The standard dosage of Femara for ordinary patients is a tablet of 2.5 mg taken once a day or every other day in some cases. The dosage can be increased by your medical advisor depending on the severity of your condition. It is required to take frequent blood tests during the course of your treatment with Femara in order to determine the changes of the levels of estrogen in blood.

Femara should not be used by women who haven’t completely gone through menopause. Your health care specialist should be informed if you suffer from liver disease (especially cirrhosis), osteoporosis or high levels of cholesterol. The drug should not be consumed if you are pregnant, because it can negatively affect the unborn baby or lead to certain birth defects. Other types of drugs can interact with this medication. Inform your health care specialist if you are taking Tamoxifen, which can interact with Femara and make it less effective. You should also avoid taking birth control tablets which contain estrogen.
