What is Famvir?
Famvir is an antiviral medication administered for the treatment of infections in adults (both immunocompetent and HIV-infected ones) that are caused by certain types of herpes virus including those provoked by:
  • Varicella zoster, which causes herpes zoster (shingles) and ophthalmic zoster (shingles around the area of the eye);
  • Herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2, which cause cold sores and genital herpes.
Although this medication does not cure the infection, it can help to shorten the duration of symptoms and relieve them. Famvir relieves burning, pain, tingling and itching as well as prevents and heals herpes sores.

How does Famvir work?
The active component of Famvir is Famciclovir. It works by suppressing the replication of the viral DNA and thus stops the reproduction of the infecting virus, slows its growth and spread in the body. Famciclovir belongs to the class of drugs called “prodrugs”, which means that it is not directly active against herpes viruses. Once it gets into the body, it is converted into penciclovir that is actually active against the viruses.

How to take Famvir?
The daily dose and the duration of therapy depend on the type of virus that causes infection. The dose for the treatment of shingles is 500 mg taken 3 times per day during 7 days. The dose for the treatment of genital herpes depends on the stage of the patient’s infection and on the state of his or her immune system.

It’s better to take Famvir as soon as the first symptoms of the herpes infection appear since the virus starts reproducing early in the infection.

Are there any contraindications?
Famvir is contraindicated in those patients who are allergic to Famciclovir, Penciclovir or any inactive component of this medication. This medication is not to be used in patents below the age of 18 years.
