What is Enalapril?
Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor licensed to treat hypertension, some types of chronic heart failure and diabetic neuropathy. It contains enalapril maleate, which is bioactivated following oral administration by hydrolysis of the ethyl ester to enalaprilat, causing blood vessels to relax and lowering blood pressure. The drug comes in tablets with various dosage forms and is typically taken once or twice a day.

When is Enalapril prescribed?
Enalapril is prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, congestive heart failure and left ventricular dysfunction. It can also be prescribed to treat kidney problems in people with scleroderma in the absence of hypertension. In case of congestive heart failure treatment the drug is usually prescribed concomitantly with diuretics and digitalis. The drug is approved for treating high blood pressure in children of one month old and more.

How to take Enalapril?
Enalapril dosage is determined by the prescribing physician in accordance with the type of illness, coexisting diseases and other medicines the patient may already be receiving. The usual dosage for hypertension is 10-40 mg daily, which can be given as a single dose or in two divided doses. Congestive heart failure is treated with 2,5-20 mg twice daily. The initial dose for left ventricular dysfunction is 2,5 mg a day, which can be gradually up-titrated to 20 mg a day in one or two intakes. The initial pediatric dose is 0,08 mg/kg up to 5 mg a day.

What are Enalapril side effects?
Enalapril is generally well tolerated, though it may cause some mild side effects as dizziness, body weakness, hypotension and cough. More serious side effects include allergic reactions, swelling, vertigo, shortness of breath, wheezing, fainting. In very rare cases the drug may cause renal and erectile dysfunction.

When is Enalapril contraindicated?
Enalapril is referred to FDA pregnancy risk category D and is contraindicated to pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is also contraindicated at individual intolerance to this product and shouldn’t be prescribed to patients with a history of angioedema associated with previous ACE inhibitor treatment, as well as to people with hereditary or idiopathic angioedema.
