What is Diltiazem?
Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker used to treat a range of heart and blood pressure conditions. Like other calcium channel blockers, Diltiazem functions by relaxing the muscles of the heart, easing blood flow and lowering blood pressure. Calcium channel blockers like Diltiazem are very sought after nowadays, given the number of patients suffering from hypertensive illness around the world. However, what sets Diltiazem apart from other calcium channel blockers is its negative inotropic effect and the fact that it is a benzothiazepine.
What are the indications for using Diltiazem?
Diltiazem is suitable for treating the following conditions:
- Hypertension, otherwise known as high blood pressure. Hypertension makes it difficult for the heart to work efficiently, and long term hypertension often causes conditions like coronary heart disease and events like stroke and heart attack. Few people know it, but hypertension affects the majority of people at one time or another, though it is much more common among the elderly. Sometimes, lifestyle factors like diet, exercise and drinking have a hand in its appearance.
- Angina pectoris is a condition that occurs when the heart muscle becomes ischemic when they become blocked or spasm. People with angina tend to experience a strong pain in the center of their chest, sometimes described as a strangling feeling. In some cases, adjoining body parts are affected. Angina is most commonly caused by age, smoking, hypertension, kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.
- Arrhythmia, also known as irregular heartbeat. When heartbeat is too fast or too slow, blood pressure destabilizes, which can lead to a number of unfortunate events. Usually, patients become aware of irregular palpitations.
- Migraine. A migraine is a sharp and long-lasting headache that occurs systematically and sometimes causes other symptoms.
Diltiazem comes in tablets of 30 to 120 mg, which should be administered orally with a glass of water. Dosages vary based on the condition. The standard dose for treating heart conditions is 30-60 mg once a day, but more specific instructions should be given by your physician.
What are the contraindications for using Diltiazem?
Diltiazem is contraindicated to patients who suffer from liver disease, kidney disease, patients who've recently experienced heart attacks or suffer from low blood pressure, AV block and sick sinus syndrome, along with those with hypersensitivity issues or low blood pressure. The effect of Diltiazem on pregnancy is unknown at this time. Diltiazem is known to interact with certain drugs, including amiodarone, buspirone, carbamazepine, quinidine, digoxin, rifampin, and several others, so they must not be combined.
What are the adverse effects of using Diltiazem?
According to clinical trials, some patients may experience dizziness, headache, nausea, skin rashes, and upset stomach.
