What is Crestor?
Crestor is a synthetic drug in the class of statins used for lowering of lipid levels. Its active component, Rosuvastatin, was first developed by a Japanese pharmaceutical company and it is one of the highest-selling medicines in the United States at the moment. Crestor treats high cholesterol levels and prevents different cardiovascular diseases and reduces chances of a stroke. High cholesterol is characterized by high levels of fat in the blood. To achieve the best results from taking Crestor, it is recommended to stop smoking, exercise regularly and opt for a low-cholesterol diet. Any changes to your life-style should be approved by your doctor.

What are the indications for using Crestor?
The drug is intended to prevent the following conditions:

  • Heart attack – happens when the blood stops reaching a section of the heart. High cholesterol can cause heart complications, because it builds up in arteries and makes it harder for blood to run through.

  • Stroke – takes place when the blood gets blocked and cannot reach a certain part of the brain. This can be caused by “bad” cholesterol, which promotes the formation of atheromas (accumulation of cholesterol and calcium on artery walls) that reduce blood flow. Reducing the “bad” cholesterol in blood can significantly lower the chances of getting a stroke.

What is the dosage of Crestor?
Crestor is supplied in dosage of 5 mg to a maximum of 40 mg. The dosage of Crestor is determined by your doctor depending on the severity of your condition, age and medical history. The tablets are swallowed whole with enough water independently of food. 5 to 20 mg per day is the standard dose in most cases. Any adjustments of the dosage should be approved by your medical advisor.

What are the contraindications for using Crestor?
Women who are pregnant and those who breastfeed are not allowed to take the drug, as it can have negative effects on the baby. Consult your doctor about the drug if you have diabetes, kidney problems and especially thyroid disorder. People of Asian descent can be more sensitive to the active component of the drug, so the initial dosage might be lower than usual. You should also inform your doctor about the amount of alcohol you drink, as it can make the drug less effective.

What are the adverse effects of Crestor?
Headaches, nausea, weakness, tiredness, stomach pain and dark urine are among common complaints. If you have any allergic reactions or severe adverse effects, contact your doctor without hesitation.
