What is Champix?
Champix is a medication that was developed specifically to help smokers give up smoking. It is based on a nicotine-free plant extract found in the Kowhai and Golden Rain tree in New Zealand. It was first licensed in the UK in 2006 and has since helped thousands to give up smoking. Champix functions by stimulating the nicotine receptors in the brain cells, mimicking the way nicotine works. This greatly reduces a person’s cravings when they give up smoking. It also blocks the receptors and keeps nicotine from latching onto the receptors. This blocks the nicotine’s effects and makes it easier for people to keep themselves from smoking.
What are the indications for using Champix?
Champix is a great drug for individuals who have a strong desire to give up smoking. Champix makes the process much easier. This is also a fantastic medication for those people who easily give into temptation and can’t stop themselves from reaching for a cigarette. Champix alleviates the cravings. It can also be prescribed for people who are unable to give up smoking completely. Even if a person smokes while on Champix, the drug reduces the nicotine’s effects, making it less enjoyable, and leading to cessation.
What is the dosage for Champix?
Champix is available in 0.5mg and 1mg film-coated tablets. Smokers should take 0.5mg of Champix once a day for the first 3 days, then 0.5mg twice a day for days 4-7, and 1mg twice a day after the eighth and until the end of treatment. The usual treatment time is 12 weeks. If the patient does not stop smoking in this period, the drug should be given for another 12 weeks.
What are the contraindications for using Champix?
Champix should not be used by individuals who are allergic to Champix or to its components. It may also be inappropriate for people with kidney problems, heart or blood vessel problems, depression, or seizures. No studies have been done to determine if Champix is safe for children under 18. Also, consult with your medical practitioner if you are pregnant, drink alcohol, or are using other drugs to quit smoking, to make sure that Champix is an appropriate drug for you.
