What is Cephalexin?
Cephalexin is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for oral administration. It is a licensed drug for treatment and prevention of various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, middle ear infections, bone infections, skin infections, urinary infections and heart valve infections. It works by affecting the bacteria cell walls causing them to die, thus stopping the spread of infection in the body. Similarly to other antibiotics, it is not effective against viral infections. The drug comes in capsule form in a variety of strength.

When is Cephalexin indicated?
Cephalexin is indicated for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in both pediatric and geriatric patients. It is often used in patients allergic to penicillin. The drug is prescribed for pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, sinusitis, osteomyelitis, otitis media, prostatitis, cellulitis, impetigo and UTIs. It is also applied in prevention of bacterial myocarditis and recurrent UTIs. The drug is generally safe for use during pregnancy and breast feeding.

How to take Cephalexin?
Cephalexin dosage for adults usually ranges from 1 to 4 g a day in equally spaced doses. Pediatric dose ranges from 25 to 50 mg/kg in equally spaced doses. For most infections, adults and children over 15 are typically administered 250 mg q6h or 500 mg q12h. Duration of therapy is 7-14 days depending on the disease. To prevent heart valve infection, 2000 mg is administered 1hour prior to surgery. Capsules can be taken regardless to meals and should be washed down with a glass of water.

What are Cephalexin side effects?
Cephalexin may spur hypersensitivity reactions and gastrointestinal disturbances. These may be skin rash, urticaria, angioedema, fever, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. It may also provoke allergic reactions as itching, rash, swelling, peeling skin and trouble breathing. Prolonged or repeated use of the drug may result in oral thrush or yeast infection. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any treatment issues.

What are Cephalexin contraindications?
Cephalexin is contraindicated to patients with known hypersensitivity reaction to cephalosporins. Caution should be exercised when administering the antibiotic to patients with impaired renal or hepatic function.
