What is Celexa?
Celexa is an antidepressant medication that belongs to the class of serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is available in tablet form with various strengths of Citalopram hydrobromide as active ingredient. It works by preventing the uptake of the neurotransmitter serotonin, thus causing more free serotonin in the brain to stimulate nerve cells. Since an imbalance among neurotransmitters in the brain is the cause of depression, by balancing the levels of serotonin the drug reduces the symptoms of depression and prevents its relapse.

When is Celexa indicated?
Celexa is indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder or clinical depression in adults. The medication is often prescribed along with counseling and therapy to treat depression. In some countries the medication is licensed to treat depressive episodes, obsessive-compulsive disorder and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. The drug is not approved for use in children and adolescents.

How to take Celexa?
Celexa is usually taken once daily, mornings or evenings, without regard to food. The starting dose for depression is 20 mg once daily, which after a week can be decreased or increased to a maximum daily dose of 40 mg, as necessary. Panic disorder is treated with 10 mg once daily, which after a week can be increased to 20 or 30 mg daily. The maximum daily dose for patients over the age of 60 and patients with hepatic impairment shouldn’t exceed 20 mg daily. Gradual discontinuation of the drug is required to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

What are Celexa side effects?
Celexa may cause excessive sweating, drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, trembling, frequent urination, weight changes, decreased libido and anorgasmia. In rare cases, the drug may cause mood swings, anxiety, dizziness, headache, photosensitivity, bruxism, vivid dreaming, hallucinations, arrhythmia and blood pressure changes.

When is Celexa contraindicated?
Celexa is contraindicated to be used concomitantly with Pimozide or monoamine oxidase inhibitors because of increased risk of serotonin syndrome. It shouldn’t be administered to patients allergic to Citalopram or any of the tableting excipients. Concomitant use of NSAIDs, aspirin, warfarin and other anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding events. The drug belongs to pregnancy category C.
