What is Cefixime?
Cefixime is a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic for internal use. It works by interfering with bacteria’s ability to make cell walls, thus stopping their multiplication and growth. It is active against many gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Proteus mirabilis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae among others.

When is Cefixime indicated?
Cefixime is indicated for the treatment of infectious inflammatory diseases provoked by susceptible microorganisms: tonsillitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, acute or chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, otitis media, typhoid fever, uncomplicated UTIs as well as uncomplicated diarrhea. The drug is approved for use in children over 6 months of age.

How to take Cefixime?
Cefixime standard dose for majority of infections in adults and children over 12 years of age is 400 mg once a day or 200 mg twice a day. Pediatric dose is calculated according to the child’s weight and usually is 8mg/kg q24h or 4 mg/kg q12h. The length of treatment depends on the type and severity of infection and should be determined by the prescribing doctor on a case-by-case basis. Infections incited by Streptococcus pyogenes should be treated for at least 10 days. Uncomplicated cervical gonococcal infections in adults are treated with a single oral dose of 400 mg.

What are Cefixime side effects?
Cefixime is generally well tolerated, but as the case may be it can cause stomach upset, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness and headache. In rare cases the drug may cause severe abdominal pain, yellowing of eyes and skin, dark urine, unusual tiredness and hypersensitivity reactions. Prolonged usage of the drug may result in oral or vaginal yeast infection. Report to your healthcare provider if you develop any of the side effects mentioned above to eliminate the problem.

When is Cefixime contraindicated?
Cefixime is contraindicated to people with known hypersensitivity to any cephalosporin antibiotics. However, contrary to other cephalosporin drugs, Cefixime is not contraindicated to people with a true penicillin allergy. The drug is referred to the FDA pregnancy risk category B. Patients with impaired renal function require the adjustment of the drug dosage.
