What is Anafranil?
Anafranil is used for the treatment of different forms of depressive disorders including deep and prolonged depression. The list of Anafranil indications includes obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias and panic attacks, depressive conditions of different etiology with various symptoms, chronic pain syndrome and cataplexy (muscular weakness) associated with narcolepsy (attacks of extreme sleepiness).

How does Anafranil work?
The active component of Anafranil is Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant that works by inhibiting the reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin, which results in the increase of the amount of these substances in the brain. Low levels of serotonin as well as noradrenaline are believed to contribute to the development of depressive disorders. Anafranil relieves such symptoms as psychomotor retardation, depressed mood and anxiety. The clinical effect of this drug can be noticed in about 2-3 weeks after the start of the treatment.

How to take it?
Anafranil dosage should be individually adjusted taking into consideration the severity of the patient’s condition. It’s usually administered in the dose of 10 mg - 150 mg taken in divided doses during the day. If required, the dose can be slowly increased in more severe cases.

Are there any contraindications to this drug?
Anafranil is contraindicated if a patient is:
  • hypersensitive to Clomipramine or any other components of Anafranil;
  • hypersensitive to any other drugs from the class of tricyclic antidepressants;
  • already taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or have been using it within the past three weeks;
  • recovering from a recent myocardial infarction (within the last three months);
  • a pregnant or breast-feeding woman;
  • suffering from a serious heart or liver disease, glaucoma, any other mental disorders apart from phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder or depression.

What are the side effects of Anafranil?
The most common adverse reactions of Anafranil include dry mouth, constipation, urinary retention, confusion, enlarged pupils, accommodation disorders, speech disturbances, changes in appetite, dizziness, increased sweating, headaches, tremor, nausea, sexual disturbances, fatigue, hot flashes, heart rhythm disturbances and others. However, Anafranil side effects are as a rule mild and disappear with the continuation of the treatment.
