What is Allopurinol?
Allopurinol is a medication prescribed for treatment of excessive amount of uric acid in the body, which can be the reason of kidney stones formation and also an appearance of gout. Moreover, Allopurinol can be prescribed for other purposes, which can be determined by your medical advisor.
What are the indications for using Allopurinol?
The drug can be effective in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Hyperuricemia. This condition is characterized by an increased amount of uric acid in blood plasma. Allopurinol is aimed at decreasing the levels of uric acid, thus avoiding further complications, such as development of kidney stones or gout.
Allopurinol dosage should be determined by your medical advisor depending on the severity of your condition, age and weight. Patients that suffer from renal insufficiency are recommended to start with the standard dose of 100 mg. Depending on your reaction to the drug and changes of the levels of uric acid, the dosage can be adjusted. However, you should never increase the dosage without consulting with your health care provider.
What are the contraindications for using Allopurinol?
Before starting treatment using Allopurinol, your medical advisor should be informed about your medical history. Special attention should be paid to high blood pressure, diabetes or any problems with kidneys or liver. Also, your health care specialist should be informed about any changes in your diet. In some cases, patients are advised to decrease an intake of different acids, such as Vitamin C. Consult your doctor about the intake of Allopurinol during pregnancy and the period of breastfeeding, but it is usually not recommended to use the drug in these periods.
What are the adverse effects of Allopurinol?
Mild adverse effects of taking Allopurinol may include tiredness, diarrhea, nausea and upset stomach. As long as you follow all your doctor’s instructions, these symptoms don’t require any special medical attention. However, if you experience severe adverse effects, which may include numbness in any part of the body, extreme fatigue, painful urination, changing of the color of urine or vomiting, you should contact your medical advisor immediately. Allergic reactions to the drug are uncommon, but if you notice any unusual redness, rash, itching or swelling, seek medical help without hesitation.
