What is Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus is an inhalation drug used to treat symptoms of asthma or lung disease. It contains a mix of 2 medications – Fluticasone and Salmeterol. This drug was developed in the 1990’s and received FDA approval in 2000. The drugs combined in Advair Diskus belong to the categories of corticosteroid and beta agonist, but both work in similar ways, opening the body’s airways and facilitating free breathing.

What are the indications for using Advair Diskus?
Diskus is most commonly used to treat asthma. This is a highly prevalent disease that affects the lungs. Patients who suffer from asthma experience regular shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and tightness in the chest area. Sudden bouts of symptoms are often called “asthma attacks”. Asthma has many different causes, including a genetic link, exposure to allergens or pollution, and use of aspirin or beta-blockers. The second major indication for Advair Diskus is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has symptoms similar to asthma, and is also characterized by poor airflow in airways.

What is the dosage of Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus is administered in the form of an inhalation via a special device known as the inhaler. It comes as a powder with strengths of 50, 100, 250, and 500 mg. This medication should be taken twice a day by adults, or more often in the event that an asthma attack occurs. For children up to 11 years of age, the daily dosage should include two inhalations of 50/100 mg twelve hours apart. The maximum recommended daily dose for adults is 1000 mg, but this quantity should be determined by the intensity of the patient’s asthma.

What are the contraindications for using Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus should not be taken by anyone allergic to Fluticasone or Salmeterol, as well as pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patients with a history of infections, hypertension, thyroid conditions, bone loss, heart disease, diabetes, or liver disease should get a professional’s opinion before taking the drug. Advair Diskus is known to interact with aldesleukin, azole antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics, and a range of other products.

What are the adverse effects of Advair Diskus?
Advair Diskus may cause headache, throat ache, throat irritation, upset stomach, and hoarse voice. Patients who experience more severe effects should get medical assistance.
